A tragic stampede during the distribution of food items to vulnerable and elderly individuals at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, Abuja, has left ten people dead and eight others injured. The incident occurred early Saturday morning around 6:30 a.m., claiming the lives of four children among the deceased.
According to reports, the victims were part of a large crowd that had gathered for the charitable distribution. Among the injured, four have been treated and discharged, while the remaining are still receiving medical attention.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command confirmed the incident and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, while wishing the injured a swift recovery.

In a statement, FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, urged organizers of large gatherings or charitable activities to notify the police ahead of such events to ensure adequate security measures are in place.
The statement highlighted that failure to comply with this directive could result in organizers being held accountable for any incidents or loss of life due to negligence. The FCT Police reiterated their commitment to safeguarding lives and property, calling on the public to cooperate by adhering to safety guidelines and reporting emergencies through designated control room numbers.
