Nigerians irked as Government declares impromptu Public Holiday

The passing of the former president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has garnered diversed view from Nigerians across board.

Enough being said, the government of the day suddenly declared a public holiday with few hours notice to Nigerians which has disrupted a whole of programs for Nigerians.

Jkcynonews gathered that the 10th assembly had initially shifted their plenary for two weeks, citing the passing of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari.

Again, it was widely reported that the federal government had ordered for a 7-day national mourning, with all flags flown at half mast.

However, the sudden news of a public holiday which initially filtered like a rumor, greeted most Nigerians with palpable sense of frustration and anger. It actually disrupted already scheduled events which some may not recover from.

An activist and a lawyer, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu wrote on his official X handle :

“Abubakar Tafawa Balewa died in office – No public holiday

Aguiyi-Ironsi died in office – No public holiday

Murtala Mohammed died in office – No public holiday

Sani Abacha died in office – No public holiday

#UMYA died in office – No public holiday.”

Although, some persons corrected that a public holiday was granted when Umaru Yar’dua died. Obviously, Umaru was a sitting president whilst Buhari isn’t. Both comparisons wouldn’t suffice.

In response to his tweet, Osquare wrote :

” How can a public holiday be declared at the ninth hour like this? Many people have had appointments planned, and for some, sticking to their schedule is crucial. Missing that day could have serious consequences for them. Court judgments, embassy appointments, and other important plans have all been disrupted by the most incompetent government in history.”

People keep pouring their personal opinions on the issue notwithstanding the stance of the Federal Government.
