Open letter to Reuben Abati after his ethnic divide rhetorics

Arise News tv journalist, Reuben Abati has received serious backlash from Nigerians after his rash statements made during their morning show program. Abati opined that the Northerners wouldn’t trust Peter Obi, who earlier pledged to serve one term if elected, with their votes because of the ills of the Civil war which ended since 1970.

Abati who was quite vociferous about his convictions rather tilted towards ethnic rhetorics, fanning the ambers of ethnic divide with the preponderance of the civil war semantics.

A concerned Nigerian who seem to find his statements during their “morning show” program decided to write him an open letter.

He wrote below :

“Open Letter to Reuben Abati

Dear Dr. Reuben Abati,
Your recent commentary regarding Peter Obi’s one-term presidency proposal and your assertion that “the civil war has not ended” demand a firm and public response.

Your cynicism may find applause in certain elite circles, but it is increasingly out of touch with the aspirations and realities of today’s Nigeria.

Your claim that the North will not buy into Peter Obi’s single-term promise is not only dismissive it is an affront to the political intelligence and dignity of millions of northerners who, like every other region, are weary of bad governance, worsening poverty, and growing insecurity.

Nigerians whether from Kano or Calabar, Sokoto or Aba are not seeking ethnic representatives or tribal placeholders. They are demanding results. They are searching for a leader who will not steal from them, who will rebuild broken institutions, and who will put country before self.

That is precisely what Peter Obi’s one-term offer represents: a sacrifice, a bridge, and a bold reset.
The North understands sacrifice. The North understands leadership. And to suggest that they would reject a competent, transparent, and reform-driven candidate merely because he is offering to serve for only one term is not political analysis its political condescension.

Even more troubling is your claim that the civil war has not ended. That statement, coming from someone of your public stature, is not only reckless it is dangerous.
If, nearly 60 years after the guns fell silent, we are still framing national discourse through the lens of Biafra vs Nigeria, then we have truly failed the next generation.

The civil war that matters today is not Igbo vs Hausa, or South vs North. It is the war between a corrupt elite and the suffering masses. And on that battlefield, Peter Obi stands with the people.
It is time the like of you stopped projecting your own fears, grudges, and outdated narratives onto the Nigerian electorate.

This country is evolving. The 2023 election proved that young Nigerians across ethnicity, faith, and region are uniting behind a new political consciousness: one that prioritizes competence, character, and accountability.

Dr. Abati, you may no longer believe in the possibility of a united, reformed Nigeria. But millions of Nigerians like us still do and we are ready to prove it with our votes.

Respectfully,
TenOverTen.

Some Nigerians

But, why the people of Nigeria be making their Politics revolve around what would be the gains of the people from the North…?

Which part of the North do they mean?

North East, West or Central?

Must the North be considered before any major political decisions are made?

Could it be because of the horrible rigging days of the “KKK” states?

Do they really think Northern Nigerians don’t understand the meaning of good governance?

Where does the entire South come into this equation?
