Politics Vs Football :The Hypocrisy of Nigerian Politicians

Sports

The Super Falcons of Nigeria defeated Morocco at the just concluded WAFCON 2024 to fulfill mission X in a grand style yesterday to become the most successful African team in the history of women football having won it ten times.

The resultant effect of that football success brought so much joy to the nation of Nigeria which is grappling with the bizarre situations of bad governance… Atleast, momentarily!!!

However, something notably striking was evident yesterday during and after the match.

No one realized the hero of the match, Esther Okoronkwo is from the Igbo extraction..

No one noticed that the scintillating captain, Ajibade is from the Yoruba tribe..

No one reminded the “oyibo lady” Plumptre that she’s isn’t Nigerian enough…

No one even knew where the coach is from, it wasn’t necessary, so long as he could deliver, and eventually delivered. That was all that mattered the most to majority of Nigerians who had their hearts almost jumping out when the Falcons were trailing the Moroccans before the half time mark.

I was carefully waiting to hear anyone tribalize where the goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie is from…. Hey, she didn’t concede a single goal till the semi final….. It only meant, Nigerians knew that for the football team to move forward, they’d prioritize competence over religion, tribe or region.

The most accomplished African footballer alive is Rashedat Oshoala (both in male and female football). No one cares she’s a Muslim nor Yoruba, so long as she’s scoring goal.

She experienced some dip in her form coming into the competition due to age, leading to the coach dropping her to the bench till the ending part of the finals against Morocco.

No one shrugged… No one hissed, and accused the coach of being partial or playing the tribal card.

This isn’t peculiar to the Female football, it’s even more prevalent to the male counterpart, the Super Eagles.

Ahmed Musa has never been called Ariwa, nor the brilliant goal keeper, Nwabali been identified as Igbo.

From my analogous emphasis above, you could deduce that the dysfunctional leadership in Nigeria, plagued by bigotry, incompetence, religious divide et al are all self inflicted?

How come, it’s only FOOTBALL that unites Nigeria while politicians keep diving Nigerians with “politrics”?

How come, when it comes to football, where one comes from doesn’t matter but when it comes to choosing the people that lead us, they start reminding you where you’re from?

Terrible leaders become the aftermath of such evil emotional blackmail and permutations.

The evil Nigerian leaders have mastered the divisive methods of using religion and tribe to divide Nigerians when they are about to elect their leaders.

To them, competence doesn’t come to play here….

Dear Nigerians, especially the youths whose future is being traded and gambled by same old, greedy recycled gluttons should wake up.

It’s not about you nor your future but the unquenchable quest to keep squandering your future…

Be wise…

Happy Sunday and Congratulations to the Super Falcons…
