Public Almsgiving, assisting beggers is punishable offense in Anambra

The Anambra State Government has proscribed the sharing of food items, gifts or money to street beggars in public spaces, especially in some designated places such as Aroma Bridge in Awka, the state capital, and other popular areas.

The government of Anambra State also placed a ban on all sorts of public begging, loitering, street trading b and other related activities beneath the bridges in Awka.

This law became necessary to uphold the esthetics of the capital city, which is the face of the state.

This statement was released by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Anambra State Capital Territory Development Authority, Mr. Ossy Onuko, on Thursday, while stating that the directive is part of the state government’s efforts to sanitise the capital city and maintain public order.

Mr Onuko further said that anyone found violating this new order will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.

He further, cautioned content creators, philanthropists, and charity groups against distributing food, cash, or any form of alms to street children, beggars in any of the public spaces.

Though he acknowledged that the charitable acts were for good intentions but acknowledged that such acts are adding to public menace due to the continued loitering and congregation of destitute individuals in the city.

In his words “Such actions are illegal and we hereby warn that any individual or group found engaging in them will be seen as promoting civil disorder and will face legal action.”

You see, i have a different opinion about this….

Government is always too quick to care more about mere esthetics than humanity.

What happened to Government building a large open area where destitutes gather daily such that people can have access to them easily.

Government can even make budget and be cooking for them daily.

They said NGOs can gift them, how do NGOs see them to gift them since public begging is proscribed?

Government is so quick to ban without a commensurate alternative….

Nonsense and ingredients
