#WorldCancerDay : The world raises awareness on cancer

According to World Health Organization, WHO, Each year 4 February is commemorated as World Cancer Day. Today marks twenty-five years of signing the Charter of Paris Against Cancer at the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millenium. On this year’s World Cancer Day themed United by Unique, which is a reminder of the collective commitment against cancer, WHO acknowledges every patient’s unique experiences and the value of people-centered care delivered jointly by healthcare providers, families, friends and community.

Today, World Cancer Day is actually a reminder that we all have a role to play in the fight against cancer. Millions of people around the world are affected by this disease, but early detection, healthy lifestyle choices, and better access to treatment can save lives.

There is actually no visible discriminatory thing about cancer , but the differences in how it is prevented, diagnosed, and treated reveal the unfair gaps that still exist in healthcare systems across Europe.

From statistics, every nine seconds, someone in the EU and other parts of the world hears the life-threatening words “you have cancer”. In 2022 alone, 2.7 million people faced this diagnosis. The disease has reportedly claimed the lives of an estimated 1.3 million individuals that same year, making it the second leading cause of death in Europe. These are real figures, real data of human lives and the bizarre effects of cancer on human beings living across the world.

Cancer in women, especially breast and cervical cancer, is one of the most common and most serious diseases in women. It is pertinent and essential requirement that women globally have access to prevention strategies, to screening and to best available therapies.

So many persons across the world are currently living with cancer or better at the preliminary stage of being diagnosed of cancer.

Today is actually a day to raise awareness, show support, and take action in the fight against cancer. This is a subtle reminder to us that everyone has a role to play—whether through prevention, early detection, treatment, or support.

So, let’s unite to raise awareness on early detection, prevention, and treatment by supporting patient-centered care, we can make a difference in the fight against cancer. Together, we can save lives.

As one of the leading causes of death world over, it’s necessary that we add our voices to raise awareness about cancer!

More so, a small act of kindness, such as sharing uplifting messages and words of encouragement, can have a profound impact on those affected by cancer.

In Nigeria, the first lady of Taraba state in her support for the #WorldCancerDay shared some soul touching messages below :

“Today, we stand in solidarity with all those affected by cancer and reaffirm our commitment to raising awareness, promoting early detection, and ensuring access to quality care.

Cancer knows no boundaries, but neither does our determination to fight it. Through education, prevention, and support, we can save lives and give hope to those battling this disease.

As the First Lady of Taraba State, I encourage everyone to take proactive steps—regular screenings, healthy living, and supporting those in need. Together, we can close the care gap and create a future where no one fights cancer alone.

💜 Let’s spread awareness.
💜 Let’s support survivors.
💜 Let’s keep hope alive.
